A Dutch Company in Boston - Ultimaker’s 3D Printers are Transforming Design and Engineering

Ultimaker is a 3D printer manufacturing company established in the Netherlands. The offices and assembly lines of this company are in the US. It was founded by Martin Elserman, Erik de Brujin, and Siert Wijnia in 2011. The president of Ultimaker North America, John Kawola, spoke about his Dutch-based 3D printer company and its larger presence in the larger 3D market. He spoke on multiple topics like the decision for Ultimaker to situate their US-based company in Boston, how the 3D printer company got started, and how the company sees the overall 3D printing market and their position in it.

The most important global location for companies working with CAD-CAM technology is Boston. It is also the perfect place for the Dutch 3D printer company Ultimaker to set up the shop. It was Kawola who convinced Ultimaker’s authority to settle in Boston. He said, “Boston is a pretty good place for this, because, one, there are other 3D printing companies here, but probably more importantly, the CAD companies are here.”

Kawola knows a lot about this industry. He has seen the industry in three major phases, and he labeled them as 3D printing 1.0, 3D printing 2.0, and now the present is 3.0 phase. He was a part of a company and sold that company to 3D systems about six years ago.

3D printing entered its 3.0 phase somewhere in 2011 or 2012 and that’s when things began to get exciting. If the industry continues to grow with this pace, soon we will see the 4.0 phase of 3D printing.
